Pro Blogger Shares Ten Tips For New Bloggers

IBlog Sign‘ve been cutting down on attending webinars, but when Pro Blogger Darren Rowse offered to share ten tips he wished he had known about when he was starting to blog, it was a no brainer.

Darren’s work inspired me to see greater possibilities for blogging. He started blogging as a hobby, then turned it into his profession. His Digital Photography and other websites attract 20 million page views monthly, plus he has 350,000 social network connections and 230,000 members in the Problogger forums.

According to Darren, successful blogging is usually the result of consistent small actions over time, resulting in quality content and the creation of a community of like minded readers and participants.

Darren is quick to point out that promoting one’s blog is essential, especially in the beginning, as readers don’t “just appear out of thin air”.

Ten Tips For New Bloggers

Listed below are the ten things Darren wished he had known about blogging when he started.

1. If you want your blog to be a business, you must treat as a business.

2. Identify who you want to read your blog as it will inform your strategy for content, promotion, community building and monetize methods.

3. Use the power of email to drive traffic, profit, build community and branding. (Yes, email used this way still works!)

4. Pop-ups work better than static forms to capture subscribers. Darren showed us his statistics. ( I don’t like pop-ups but it is hard to argue against the impressive results.)

5.  Create your own products. Darren revealed that 46{b836676211964b66ddb1a94012779accd2cb69eec60a63bc16d10fd7c8344bc8} of his earnings came from his own product sales; 11{b836676211964b66ddb1a94012779accd2cb69eec60a63bc16d10fd7c8344bc8} from  affiliate commissions, 26{b836676211964b66ddb1a94012779accd2cb69eec60a63bc16d10fd7c8344bc8} from ad networks, 10{b836676211964b66ddb1a94012779accd2cb69eec60a63bc16d10fd7c8344bc8} passive income, and 6{b836676211964b66ddb1a94012779accd2cb69eec60a63bc16d10fd7c8344bc8} from ad sales.

6. This is self-explanatory: Successful blogs inform, inspire and interact.

7.  For blog content, Darren suggests looking for sparks and identifying what topics give you energy.  If an idea or topic does not sizzle for you, then your readers will sense your lack of enthusiasm. Once you find your spark, go with the momentum and build on it.

8.  Be active. Each day, ask yourself: What action will I take today that will grow my blog? Consistent small actions – posting, promotional activities, community management – add up to produce results.

Darren challenged us to set aside 15 minutes each day to do something connected to our blogs.  The idea is to take one small bite at a time of the proverbial big ole elephant.  It could be any activity, such as:

.
  • write an eBook or book
  • contact potential advertisers
  • write emails for your autoresponder
  • create videos for a course
  • create a media kit and advertiser page
  • build a relationship with a charity
  • develop an affiliate network to promote your product
  • develop a coaching/consulting service
  • start approaching other blogs to guest post
  • plan an event
  • look at other blogs in your niche

9.     Do Good.

10.  Aim to have a BIG impact upon those you already reach. In other words, don’t forget about keeping your existing readers happy with quality content.

Darren added one more, Be Yourself!
